There are many similarities between That Hideous Strength and The Gulag Archipelago. In That Hideous Strength Jane is captured by the NICE police. They begin to interrogate her on where she had been before she had exited the train. Miss Hardcastle began to question her and Jane would not respond. When Jane did respond Miss Hardcastle continued the interrogation when she, “brought her feet together so that she had Jane’s ankles pinioned between her own. This proximity to the ogress affected Jane with such horror that she had no fears left for what they might be going to do with her.” (Lewis 140). The NICE police would have used any means necessary to get the information out of Jane if the riot had not let Jane escape. This has a very similar connection to The Gulag Archipelago because of the interrogation system in the Gulag. In Russia, the ways Stalin would tortue individuals they wanted to persecute had no limits. They would force them to admit to the crime or they would continue to be tortured. In the novel it states, “Once it was established that charges had to be brought at any cost and despite everything, threats, violence, tortures became inevitable.” (Peterson 41). They used so many different techniques such as acid baths, starvation, and threatening family members to try and get the accused to confess or accuse others. Both readings have a similar controlling body. Stalin and NICE use very similar techniques in order to get their way. A lot of the workers for Stalin were forced to do these things and they had no way out. Mark is starting to feel this way with the NICE company and is doing illegal work because he wants to feel included. Both readings have similarities with the control of the elites.
