In chapter one of The Lord of the Rings, Sam sees the bodies of dead orcs. He meets up with an orc and it runs away scared of him because of the ring. Sam puts on the ring and immediately feels the power of it. He can hear so much better because of this. This is sort of like the power of the people in totalitarianistic governments. They feel heightened by the power they have and in turn try and gain more. They try to keep their power by establishing a permanent lie, as explained by Solzhenitsyn. The evil power can make some people feel good and influence them to become bad. That is what the ring is doing to Sam in this chapter. The ring did this to Gollum and will continue to do it to people until it is destroyed. It can all happen out of nowhere. In the text it states, “Without any clear purpose he drew out the Ring and put it on again. Immediately he felt the great burden of its weight, and felt afresh, but now more strong and urgent than ever, the malice of the Eye of Mordor, searching, trying to pierce the shadows that it had made for its own defence, but which now hindered it in its unquiet and doubt.” (Tolkien 1174). Sam didn’t even put the ring on for any reason. As explained in the text he did it for no rhyme or reason. In The Gulag Archipelago it states, “The camps were guarded by men in long greatcoats with black cuffs. They were guarded by Red Army men. They were guarded by prisoner guards. They were guarded by elderly reservists. Last came the robust youngsters born during the First Five Year Plan… Twice every day, for an hour at a time, we and they shuffled along, tied together in silent and deadly brotherhood: any one of them was at liberty to kill any one of us” (Solzhenitsyn 383). This quote explains how the guards could kill anybody in the camps because of the totalitarian power. Similarly, the hobbit with the ring has the power to kill or scare away. This is dangerous to all people. Preventing this from happening and prevent totalitarianistic governments is crucial to the survival of all people. Destroying the ring was a major goal in the novel. Preventing people from having the ability to kill anyone at any time can save so many lives.
