Human beings are significantly influenced and impacted by experiences in their lives. They can change people for better or worse. In the novel That Hideous Strength Jane and her dreams are very powerful. Although they are very powerful, they are also very fragile. Because of this Jane cannot be under too much pressure or stress. Fairy Hardcastle wants to torture Mark to try and findout Jane’s wherabouts. The Deputy Director Withers doesn’t want her to do this. This is because if Jane sees the torture she will lose her abilities. In the text it states, “If we have to despair of getting the woman here with her husband’s good will, we must use torture and take the consequences. But there are other alternatives, There is desire.” (Lewis 221). This shows the intentions were to torture Mark but they didn’t through fear of losing Jane’s abilities. In the novel How to Think Seriously About The Environment, an important topic discussed is the significance of experience and its effects. Roger Scrunton says, The same story is told by recent philosophy, and above all by those writing in the phenomenological tradition founded by Edmund Husserl. Husserl reminds us that our experience and our concepts are interwoven, and that the way the world appears to us will be affected by the way in which we interact with it.” (Scruton 228). He shows that experience changes the way we look at the world and the way we can act. Jane might act differently if she sees her husband whom she loves being tortured. She could potentially lose her interesting abilities. Other research has shown that the first attachment of love can affect individuals for the rest of their lives. Studies said that kids in broken homes can have more depression and other bad things. They can get in trouble more also. (Scruton 225). This shows that from a young age individuals minds can be altered. As people get older they become more stuck in their ways, but each experience can sometimes alter someone’s thinking or overall life. Scruton talks about how kids in broken homes’ idea of love is based on their parents and how they love each other. This shows that children need to be treated and respected. The parents staying together can give a child a good backbone to get through life properly. In That Hideous Strength it is apparent that there are many bad people in NICE. If the upbringing of the Deputy Director and others in NICE were in broken homes, it would make sense why they act like this now.
