Throughout The Gulag Archipelago, Solzhenitsyn the bluecaps were similar to a police force. In Russia, they would arrest people for crimes they didn’t commit. They would also force people to do what they wanted. They had the power to act however they pleased and it was very detrimental to many people. All a bluecap had to do was make sure that he was loyal to Stalin. If a bluecap disobeyed they could be put to death. Solzhenitsyn states, “”They understood that the cases were fabricated, yet they kept on working year after year. How could they? Either they forced themselves not to think (and this in itself means the ruin of a human being), and simply accepted that this was the way it had to be and that the person who gave them their order was always right…” (Solzhenitsyn 67). This is very similar to That Hideous Strength because Frost was trying to force Mark not to think. He kept him in the cage and tried to get rid of emotion, which makes all people human. This was the plan of NICE and it is similar to what many of the deposition writers had to do to themselves. In order to validate what they were doing they had to try and force their minds to think otherwise. At the beginning of chapter 14 in That Hideous Strength it states, “SINCE THE DAY and night of the outer world made no difference in Mark’s cell, he did not know whether it was minutes or hours later that he found himself once more awake, once more confronting Frost, and still fasting.” (Lewis 272). Frost and the NICE community are trying to brainwash him into losing emotion. Another similarity, in both readings innocent people are being killed. Solzhenitsyn states, “Although others might not be aware of it, it was clear to the interrogators at least that the cases were fabricated.” (Solzhenitsyn 67). This shows that bluecaps would get innocent people convicted of crimes they did not commit. This was also apparent in Mark going to jail for nothing. At the banquet at Belbury many people were killed to try and save their own life but they all ended up dying. There was mayhem after Merlin arrived and ended up saving the day. Merlin used his power to confuse the speech. Then animals were let loose and there were a lot of complications and madness.
